How DCPD Coverage Affects You in Edmonton, Alberta

Direct Compensation for Property Damage, or DCPD coverage, is a legislative change introduced by the Government of Alberta that aims to reduce response times on collision claims. Taken into effect on January 1, 2022, DCPD enables drivers to receive coverage for vehicle repairs, contents, and loss of use if the policyholder is not at fault for the accident.

Not only is DCPD a fairer system already utilized in most provinces in Canada, but policyholders can also enjoy the following benefits:

  • Reduced subrogation-associated costs
  • Faster repairs to your vehicle without any delays or complications
  • $0 deductible (Companies can offer alternative costs for deductibles to reduce the premium charged under DCPD)
  • Long-term premium stabilization
  • 73% of Alberta drivers will see only a +/- 5% difference in their premiums

For more information about how Direct Compensation for Property Damage will directly affect you, be sure to review our DCPD Summary or give our insurance consultants a call toll-free at 1 (866) 548-2298.

Car Insurance Edmonton FAQ

Visit Go Insurance for car insurance in Edmonton

After a car accident, some of the important things you should do are:

  • Check for any injuries
  • Remain with your vehicle at the scene
  • Take photos of the vehicles and the scene for insurance documentation
  • If possible, move the vehicle safely out of traffic. If you can’t, lock the doors of your vehicle to safeguard your valuables
  • If necessary, call the Edmonton police*
  • Exchange basic information, such as contact & insurance information, with the other drivers involved
  • Report the claim to Go Insurance as soon as possible by calling us directly at 1-780-448-2298
  • If your car is not driveable, towing and temporary safe storage of the vehicle can be arranged

*Contacting the Edmonton police is not necessary if no one has been injured, if no one is impaired, the combined damage is under $2000, and/or proper documentation is on hand. Should the combined damage be over $2000, contact the police and bring the vehicle to a police station and complete a Collision Report Form. Make sure to bring your driver’s license, ownership documentation, insurance documentation, and details about the incident, such as witnesses.

Anything inside your vehicle at the time of your accident can and should be claimed under the “contents” section of your property insurance policy (i.e. home or content policy). Your property deductible will apply.

If someone else was driving your car during the accident, your insurance policy will still apply, provided that person:

  • is legally allowed to operate a motor vehicle
  • was driving your vehicle with your permission
  • has not committed a crime (under the Criminal Code of Canada) while driving your vehicle
  • was driving according to the prohibited uses clause in your policy (i.e. he/she was not racing)

If the other driver is responsible for the accident, then that driver’s insurance policy should cover for the damages caused, even if someone else was driving your car. With regards to how it affects your insurance premium, this varies on a case to case basis so make sure to get in touch with us for more insurance information at 866-548-2298.

Just like vehicles, anti-theft devices come in many makes and models. Naturally, some devices are less effective than others. Some will sound an alarm, others will shut your car down without the correct key, etc. Choose the system that’s right for you and your vehicle.

If you have any questions regarding your premium, please contact us (1.780.448.2298) and we’d be happy to go through any and all possible impacts on your premium.

Some ways that can help lower your auto insurance premium are to install an anti-theft device to prevent vehicle break-ins and automobile theft, installing winter tires once the weather outside starts to gear up for winter, and to bundle home and auto insurance policies together in an insurance package.

As your insurance premium is determined by a number of factors unique to you and your driving situation, we recommend talking to one of our insurance advisors for specific ways to lower your car or auto insurance premiums.

If you switch your home and auto insurance over to Go Insurance and become a Go Card Customer Rewards member, you can save up to 30% on your Alberta car insurance. Call today and identify yourself as a GO Card member for more insurance coverage, savings and discounts!

In Alberta, you will have to bring the following documents when purchasing auto insurance for your vehicle:

  • Vehicle registration, bill of sale, or lease agreement
    • Depending on the age of your vehicle, a vehicle inspection report form may be required
    • If your car was registered outside of Alberta, you will also need to provide an out-of-province inspection report
  • Driver’s license numbers and dates of birth for all drivers of your vehicle

If you have any questions on what documentation you will need to bring, please feel free to contact us directly at info@goinsurance.ca.

Our Edmonton Go Insurance customers can add and enjoy additional features such as roadside assistance, rental car coverage, replacement cost coverage on new vehicles, accident protection, minor conviction protection, and glass coverage for the entire vehicle with a $50 deductible! If you’re curious about what else you can add on top of your standard car insurance policy, talk to one of our insurance advisors at any of our Alberta locations!

Typically, the premiums for new drivers in Alberta are fairly high, because first-time drivers pose a higher risk to insurance companies. So insurance companies tend to be more cautious, therefore requiring a higher premium. However, as the driver ages and keeps a clean record, the insurance premium will start to decrease over time.

Despite how it sounds, no-fault insurance does not mean that you can’t be found at-fault when you find yourself involved in an auto accident. No-fault car insurance simply means that your insurance company will still file your claim and cover you for losses, regardless of who caused the accident. Edmonton drivers should exercise caution at all times and be aware of evolving city traffic rules and regulations.

To learn more about terms you may come across while purchasing your new policy, be sure to check out our Insurance Glossary page! Our consultants are also available to answer any questions you may have while making a file or looking through policy options.

Tailgating is a common problem on city roads. Remember that it is your responsibility to follow the speed limit and if someone is tailgating you, you are not required to speed up. Maintain the speed limit and the driver behind you will eventually change lanes and go ahead.
